Sweet Forgiveness

Olivia & Josh redeemed themselves from the Saturday night massacre of my new shoes...these arrived today!  (Don't be fooled, I ordered them myself -- Nine West "Sharina" on Piperlime -- they were a steal.)
They are the "look for less" after loving Kate Spade's "Charm."  Of course I prefer Kate's version, but they are $325.  I couldn't quite convince Josh to cough up that considering the pair she ate were only $20 from the J. Crew warehouse sale.

I still think it achieves the same look and will be fun for the quickly approaching wedding season!

Spring planting

With weddings and bachelorette parties (yay, Ellen!) the next few weekends, we started our spring planting today.

BEFORE -- looking very sad

More before

The supplies (lots of pink!) -- the pink watering can was an early Easter gift from mom -- the plants are all from Logan's.

The urns were looking a bit faded, so I painted them with some high-gloss paint left over from another project.

The regular little pots seemed boring, so I added some personalization to them.  I've also seen some recently where a little chalk board paint is applied so you can label herbs or plants, but I used paint I had on hand.

A bunny from my grandfather's garden that I tied some ribbons on for Easter.

The porch is now ready for spring!

Much better curb appeal

Off to enjoy a drink on the porch.

For sale by owners

A 3 1/2-year-old naughty cocker spaniel.
 In jail!

The crime

The leather addict struck again -- Josh (her enabler) left our bedroom door open when we went out Saturday night and we came home to a very guilty little dog.  I guess it's payback for the rainboots??  The worst part is I've never even worn these little beauties and was trying them on for a wedding next weekend...

Guess I better start online shopping for their replacement.

Whit

Dog in Boots - Another Dog Abuse Episode

The ultimate Olivia harassment occurred this Friday night -- check out Olive in her new rain boots.  She was actually a really good sport despite walking very awkwardly.

Josh holding Ollie down so we could get her boots on all 4 paws!

Awkward Olive

Slightly more adjusted...

Video - you must watch!

Josh and I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.  Thank God for all the entertainment we get from the little dogstress!

Happy weekend!

Scallops & Risotto

This has become one of our all time favorites -- so delicous and gourmet seeming, yet not very expensive.  The ingredients are a little cost up front (mascarpone cheese & arborio rice), but they will last for a few times of making this recipe, so it becomes very economical.

Lemon Risotto (my favorite Giada de Laurentiis recipe)
2 c. chicken broth
3 T butter
1 lg shallot, diced
1 c. Arborio rice
1/2 c. dry white wine
4 T grated Parmesan cheese
2 T mascarpone cheese (I had a hard time finding initially, but found in the gourmet cheese island in HT -- in a cream cheese tub, if you can't find you could substitute cream cheese)
1/2 lemon, zested and juiced
freshly ground pepper and sea salt

In a medium pot bring 2 c. chicken broth and 1/2 c. water to a simmer.  Keep warm and covered.

Melt 2 T butter over medium head in a large saucepan.  Add the diced shallot and saute until tender, about 3 minutes.  Add the rice and stir to coat with the butter.  Add 1/2 c. white wine - simmer until wine has almost completely evaporated (about 3 min).

Add 1/2 c. of the simmering broth and stire until almost evaporated (about 2 min).  Continue to add 1/2 c. broth to the rice until evaporated -- stirring constantly (about 2 min each 1/2 c).  Repeat this step until the broth is gone.  Remove from heat -- stir in 1 T butter, 3-4 T Parmesan cheese, 2 T mascarpone cheese, lemon zest and juice, salt & pepper.  Serve immediately.

Pan Seared Scallops
8-10 lg sea scallops
flour
salt & pepper
2 T butter

Dry off the scallops.  Salt and pepper both sides.  Dredge in flour, shaking off the excess.  Set aside on a plate.

In a medium saucepan heat 2 T of butter over high heat -- once melted (but not brown) add the scallops.  Cook about 1.5 - 2 minutes on each side -- try not to  move until browned on one side -- then flip.  Do not over cook (they do not take long!).

We usually eat with asparagus so we can use the other half of the lemon to squeeze on it and a T or two of Parmesan cheese.  Bake on 375 for 10 minutes or so until cheese is browned.  It is a delicious complement to the scallops & lemon risotto.

We tested it on some of our best friends, Kathryn and Chris, one night and they said they loved it as well!
Very yummy and easy!  Try it soon!

Our kitchen makeover

So maybe I should have showed you pictures of the work we've been doing in our little kitchen BEFORE posting ones that were created by some of the best designers & have graced the pages of Veranda.  Oh well, too late!  It does contain some of the elements I love about a kitchen -- a crystal chandelier and creamy cabinets.

The BEFORE (this was shortly after we were married...it was actually worse prior to that!)

The AFTER

The cabinets were painted and glazed on Christmas Eve!  I love how much lighter it makes the kitchen.
Olive spotting!!

The DETAILS
Chandelier was a great deal from Antiques at Five Points and a Christmas present from my sweet parents.  I love the acorn at the bottom to represent the "city of oaks."  The entire store is very reasonable.

The kitchen table and chairs came from Asheville and were DIRT cheap (less than $300 for the 4 chairs and table after Jean did her sweet talking and they are in great condition).  I'm recovering them soon to spruce them up a bit, but the fabric is ok short-term.

The detail on the back of the chairs is similar to some Oscar de la Renta created.

I fell in love with Rachel's terrarium she had on her island and my thoughtful mother-in-law purchased me one for Christmas.

Conversation piece -- on the Showcase of Kitchen's one of the designers said, "it's important for every kitchen to have something fascinating and unique -- a conversation piece."  Ours is this unusual metal for-sale sign that I snagged up and had my father-in-law hang once Josh purchased the house.  I plan to take it with me whenever we move as a little momento from our first house.

All hardware came from Anthropologie.  Robert Corprew and his crew painted the cabinets, but he said, "Whitney, my guys did a good job, but it is the hardware that really makes all the difference."  I think he's right and I'm glad I ended up deciding to invest a little more there.

The pulls

The knobs

Owl knobs -- I decided to mix these in after finding them and thinking they looked like Herend.  I have 2 over the sink and 2 over the stove.  I get more compliments on these than anything else in the room!

The next two projects in here are having curtains made (I have the fabric) and getting the chairs recovered (I have the fabric there too)...

Kitchen Tour

On Friday Jean, Donna (one of Jean's best friends) and I spent the afternoon going on the Junior League's Showcase of Kitchens.  I absolutely fell in love with the self-proclaimed "prissy" kitchen (sadly, they didn't allow photography).  It was a beautiful French provencial style and had a gorgeous marble backsplash, crystal chandelier and a light pink ceiling (which sounds terrible, but it was charming).

Here are some kitchen pictures I've been collecting:

I love the crispness and elegance of a predominantly white (or cream) kitchen.
